Song Writing Tips - Part #2
You may have enjoyed listening to the melodies of Megan Anne's music while performing in Barrie and surrounding areas. We had the pleasure of working with her during our Grand Opening Live Music Contest in 2015. We are excited to help Megan Anne get the word out about her new release. I hope many of our readers check out her music.
In this Blog, she continues a Part #2 version of songwriting tips. As Megan Anne 's music evolves, she continues to share her insight.
Megan Anne writes......
About two years ago (wow, time flies!) I had the opportunity to write a post for MTAV about my tips for beginner songwriters. I talked about trusting your gut, and finishing the ideas you believe in. While I still stand by those things, now that I’m a little older and have refined my own process, I am grateful for the opportunity to share with MTAV readers again.
1. The biggest advice I think I can give to a burgeoning writer is to remain authentic.
My
inspiration for songwriting comes from capturing the emotional development of
interpersonal relationships. What I mean by this is that I believe
relationships - whether romantic or platonic - are constantly changing and
evolving. What I strive to do in my songwriting is capture a particular moment
in time with how I and another person feel about each other. For myself, my
songs offer me a release of emotion, and closure. I hope that for listeners my
songs make them feel understood and like someone can relate to how they feel in
their own lives and their own relationships.
2. The second
most important thing to keep in mind is that inspiration can come at anytime,
from anywhere.
My songs almost always begin with the lyric writing, so I can be sure that the song will be telling the story I want it to. The lyrics can come from anywhere, whether it be an overheard snippet of conversation, or a stream of words that get stuck in my head. This can happen to me in any physical location, and places that I have written lyrics include (but are not limited to): in my room, on the bus, mid-conversation, in class, first thing in the morning, right before I fall asleep, drunk on a kitchen floor, in my crush’s basement when he was not there, in my best friend’s room while she was trying to sleep, and while on the phone with an ex-boyfriend. All of these lines of lyrics get typed into my cell phone so I know I won’t lose them.
3. And remember: the fun part is exploring your ideas.
Once the lyrics are complete, or have at least some legs to stand on, I will take them to the piano and begin carving out the melodies and chord progressions I think best serve the lyric. This process is a quieter one, and has only ever been completed on my own keyboard in the comfort of my own home, while I’m alone. All of my songs are written in the first-person perspective, because I believe that makes them feel both more personal and more relatable.
Songwriting has always been one of the most important aspects of music to me. Even when I get too old or tired to perform music, I know that I will still be writing, and getting thrilled whenever I find a lyric that manages to say exactly what I need it to.
